Automatic Controls
Solar Pool Heating Systems are generally plumbed with a 3 way diverter valve that routes the water either up through the solar collectors when the system is turned on or to the pool when the system is off - or being bypassed. In most cases if a manual valve is utilized the valve is left in the on - or open position and the pool filtration equipment is set (with the existing timer) to run during the times of day that will give the most solar gain.

An Automatic control allows the pool operator/owner to set a dial & let the pool take care of itself.

GL-235The most standard automatic control package consists of a control box, a motorized actuator and two sensors. One sensor is located on the roof with the solar collectors and it reads the temperature on the roof and tells the control box if heat is available at the collectors. The other sensor is located in the pool plumbing and it reads the water temperature and lets the control know if heat is needed or not. The user sets the control box at the desired temperature, the control reads the roof and pool temperatures and sends a signal to the motorized actuator to turn the valve on or off as needed thereby controlling the solar.
  • If there is not enough heat at the collectors to gain temperature in the pool water the control will not turn on the solar.
  • If there is no heat on the roof, the system will shut off.
  • If the pool reaches temperature, the system shuts off.
  • If we have a rain storm and the roof is cooled, the solar will shut off until it gets hot out again and then it’ll turn back on.
  • Basically, the solar system will turn itself on and off as needed in attempt to maintain the desired temperature as set by the user.
There are many types of control systems available and a solar pool heating system can often be connected to an existing control system or one being installed by a pool builder that operates other features of the swimming pool. Each type of controller will have a variety of options and not all will be solar compatible. In fact many will list that they are solar compatible but may not have the internal chip that is required for connection so while it is very likely we can hook your new solar system to your existing control it is also possible that the standard controller may be more sensible option for your pool.
