The Orange County Convention Center's massive rooftop will soon shoulder the largest solar project in Florida and the Southeast at one megawatt of clean renewable solar energy. County officials granted the contract to Johnson Controls, Inc. in partnership with Solar Source on July 8, 2008 to blanket the roof of the nation's second-largest convention center with panels that can turn sunshine into energy, without producing pollution. |

On May 5, 2006, the Florida Legislature enacted a comprehensive energy bill, Senate Bill 888. The sweeping legislation establishes the nine-member Florida Energy Commission, provides matching grants to stimulate economic development, designates Energy Efficient Week with a sales tax holiday on energy-efficient appliances and other products, and establishes the Renewable Energy Technologies Grants program to encourage the purchase of photovoltaic and solar thermal systems. |

How does a Solar PV System work?
Photovoltaic or PV is a technology that converts light, which is composed of elementary particles called photons, directly into electricity. To explain the photovoltaic solar panel in simple terms, the photons from the sunlight knock electrons into a higher state of energy, creating direct current (DC) electricity. In the solar panel or an array (many panels connected in series), the DC current is sent to an inverter to convert the DC current to AC current to meet our every day electrical needs. A quick disconnect is provided between the panel array and the inverter and between the inverter and breaker box as shown below:  PHOTOVOLTAIC ELECTRICITY can reverse your electric meters on a grid-tied system to pay back owners as long as the sun shines. When the system makes more power than it uses, it sends the surplus out to the grid and spins the meter BACKWARDS!  After dark, the grid supplies power back to the facility, home, school or business. The customer significantly reduces electric bills during the year. The owner also has the option of installing a BATTERY BACKUP SYSTEM to save the access electricity produced during the day so it will be available during times with minimal sun availability.
